  • Schi-Zam™: A Natural Energy Beverage

(Originally posted by Donnie Yance on October 4, 2012 at http://www.donnieyance.com/schi-zam-a-natural-energy-beverage/)

Energy enhancing beverages are everywhere these days, but most are designed merely to provide an intense, temporary jolt of energy. Unfortunately, this false energy leaves you depleted when the “high” wears off.

Most commercial energy drinks depend upon large amounts of caffeine (two to three times the amount found in a cup of coffee), an excessive amount of sugar (from six to sixteen teaspoons in one serving), and long list of other questionable ingredients.

Energy drinks are actually a great idea that can benefit almost everyone needing an infusion of energy, including athletes and people suffering from chronic illness or undergoing chemotherapy. But instead of drinking a highly sweetened, caffeinated, chemical concoction, try Schi-Zam™, my natural energy drink.

This delicious beverage includes coconut water, the clear, sweet liquid extracted from young green coconuts. Coconut water is rich in electrolytes, and hydrates the body more effectively than plain water. Schi-Zam™ also contains a unique herbal tea blend that not only tastes good, but also provides a wide array of antioxidants and beneficial phytonutrients. Finally, an essential component of Schi-Zam™ isPower Adapt, a high-potency herbal adaptogenic tonic.

Adaptogens are specific herbs that have been used for centuries to boost athletic performance, increase overall vitality, and provide protection against degenerative illness. This special class of herbs encourages homeostasis, optimizes metabolism, and improves resistance to a variety of adverse factors. Adaptogens enhance immune system function, and more specifically, can counteract some of the damage caused by chemotherapy, radiation and drug therapies.

Combined together, these ingredients make a delicious beverage, supplying your body with essential nutrients that help to naturally replenish energy, and at the same time facilitating the removal of toxins that accumulate with physical stressors such as exercise or chemotherapy.

Enjoy this healthful, energizing beverage as often as you like!

  • The Many Benefits of Herbal Adaptogens

Originally published at www.DonnieYance.com on October 9, 2012:

“Feel better! Have more energy! Live longer!” Sounds like a late night infomercial, or the claims made for patent medicines in the late 1800’s, doesn’t it?

But in truth, there is a class of herbs that will increase your energy, help to prevent disease, and even likely extend your lifespan. These herbs are called “adaptogens”, and I recommend them to everyone for increasing vitality and well-being.

Adaptogens got their name from their unique ability to buffer the effects of stress—they actually help the body adapt more readily to the demands of life. Everyone experiences stress, whether it’s everyday worries about work, money, and relationships; the physical demands of athletic competition; or the emotional and physical stressors of chronic illness.

When confronted with stressors, the body rallies by increasing blood pressure and heart rate, quickening breathing, and dumping glucose into the bloodstream to meet the increased demands; at the same time non-essential systems such as immune function and digestion are suppressed. When the crisis subsides, all systems are designed to return to normal.

But we were never meant to endure the long-term, daily stressors that so many of us encounter in modern life. Under conditions of chronic or severe stress, the body loses its ability to return to normal, healthy functioning. The result is the degenerative, debilitating diseases of modern life: cancer, cardiovascular disease, digestive disorders, depression, diabetes, and hypertension are just a few of the conditions that have been clearly linked to stress.

Obviously, learning to manage stress is essential for immediate and long-term health. At the same time, because it’s impossible to avoid life stressors, it’s important to do everything possible to mitigate the damaging effects. Herbal adaptogens act to normalize homeostasis, optimize metabolism, and improve resistance to a variety of adverse factors. These special herbs contain a wide range of active constituents such as polysaccharides and flavonoids that fortify immune response. They act as biological response modifiers in host defense mechanisms against cancer and other chronic diseases and help protect the bone marrow, neuroendocrine and endocrine system (including the adrenal glands), as well as the liver, kidney, brain, and other vital organs during chemotherapy and radiation.

Adaptogens, besides having stress protective, anabolic effects also possess profound anti-toxic, anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory and trophic properties that normalize numerous gene pathways and enhance recovery from stress.

I’ve been using and recommending herbal adaptogens for more than 25 years in my practice as a clinical herbalist. About ten years ago,Ben Tabachnik (a highly respected Russian scientist) and I worked together to develop two comprehensive herbal adaptogenic blends—Power Adapt and Vital Adapt—which we  designed to meet the needs of a wide range of people.

Both Vital Adapt and Power Adapt are prepared from a combination of super concentrated, carefully selected herbs that enhance optimal health and protect against age-related diseases, chronic illnesses, and acute illnesses such as colds and the flu. All of the herbs used in Vital Adapt and Power Adapt have been highly revered as traditional tonic herbs (used for thousands of years in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurvedic Medicine), and their use is supported by an enormous amount of recent scientific research that not only validates their historic usage, but also gives us new insights into their overall benefits.

Although you can expect to experience an improved sense of well being within a couple of weeks of taking Vital Adapt or Power Adapt, most of the benefits are apparent after at least six months of use. Tonic herbs are deeply nourishing, and work by steadily and gently building vitality while restoring and replenishing body systems.

Vital Adapt is a comprehensive health promoting formula and is considered a “yin” formula because it enhances vitality and essence; in Traditional Chinese Medicine, the herbs are considered to tonify the Heart, Liver, Lungs, Kidneys and Spleen. It is a powerful antioxidant and deep immune system restorative compound, and increases energy without being overly stimulating. Vital Adapt is well balanced and suitable for anyone who desires to reduce stress and achieve optimal health, and can be used on a continual basis.

Power Adapt is considered a “yang” and “Qi” formula, because it provides deep nourishment to the Spleen and Kidney systems. It is well suited as an energy endurance enhancer. Anyone undergoing extreme physical exertion will find Power Adapt will provide increased energy and stamina. Power Adaptshould be administered intermittently as needed with the guidance of a health care professional. BothVital Adapt and Power Adapt may be taken together.

Vital Adapt and Power Adapt are formulations, not single herbal extracts, and their effectiveness is based on the formulation as a whole and the synergy that exists. I have found it true that the whole is always greater than the sum of its parts. A unique process, yielding a highly concentrated, potent medicine, is used to extract each of the selected herbs in these formulas. The herbs are further concentrated by a cold-water percolation technique to maintain and preserve all of the important active constituents. This process contributes to the high quality and effectiveness of the herbs.

Whether we are mostly healthy or faced with a serious illness, adaptogens are ideal as our primary, daily supportive health supplement because of their multi-faceted beneficial effects.

  • Did You Know... Uplift & Tranquility

    Uplift™

Did you know that the St. John’s Wort extract featured in Up-Lift™is produced for us by Euromed under the highest standard of manufacturing? Euromed documents the quality of all of its extracts, from the plant through to the finished extract.

    Hypericum perforatum (St. John's Wort)

Cultivation of St. John’s Wort Herb
The St. John’s Wort herb, Hypericum perforatumis grown under the most stringent criteria for the cultivation, harvesting and processing of plants for its extract. Euromed has contracts extending over many years with growers to insure consistent quality. The use of pesticides is strictly forbidden and the supplier must certify they are not used in a Good Agricultural Practice (GAP) Certificate. Irradiation or the use of ethylene oxide gas is not permitted for herb sterilization. The St. John’s Wort herb is tested for chemical residues and other potential contaminants. This includes heavy metals – lead, cadmium and mercury and aflatoxins from mold and harmful bacteria.

    Proper Extraction Technique
The quality of the herb material is verified for correct species and presence of important active components before extraction by HPLC and TLC. The carrier, GMO-free maltodextrin is selected based on the European Pharmacopoeia Monograph for St. John’s Wort extract. This carrier is typically used for European products tested in clinical trials. The spent plant material is not used for the carrier, as heavy metals are associated with plant cellulose.

The phytochemicals are concentrated in the extract using water and ethanol from beetroot sugar fermentation. The solvent is 60% ethanol/ 40%, water (a ratio that captures both the hydrophilic and hydrophobic compounds) as described in the European Pharmacopoeia. The proper solvent ratio of St. John’s Wort extract is verified by testing the extract for a proper range of 8-12% flavonoids. These are important antioxidants for preserving the potency of other important natural active components. If the flavonoid content exceeds this range, it means the concentration of solvent is too large and exceeds the monograph limits.

The extract is dried under vacuum at low temperature to reduce oxidation to important sensitive substances like hyperforin. The extract is tested to contain no more than 0.6% quercetin, demonstrating correct low temperature extraction and drying of its extract. A special process of flash pasteurization is applied during extraction to meet low microbe limits, without affecting active components.

    Verified Potency
Hypericum perforatum aerial parts at harvest are rich in hyperforin that is susceptible to oxidation over time. This extract is tested for a high level of 3.0% hyperforin by HPLC at time of manufacture, indicating herb freshness and proper extraction technique. The extract is standardized to contain all active important natural components; naphthodianthrones (hypericin and pseudohypericin), phloroglucinols (hyperforins) and flavonoids (quercetin, isoquercetin, rutin, kaempferol, luteolin, quercetin and hyperoside). Specifically the extract is tested to contain minimum 0.3% hypericins.

    Proven Efficacy
The supplier of this extract is a division of a 90-year-old European pharmaceutical company. Its extracts are typically used in prescription medicines in Europe and have been used safely and effectively in millions of people. Clinical studies reported in the British Medical Journal, Phytomedicine, and the European journal Deutsche Apoteker Zeitung found this St. John’s Wort extract to be safe and effective.

    Tranquility™

Did you know that the word nervine refers to an herb that provides a beneficial effect on the nervous system?

    Scutellaria lateriflora (Skullcap)

Nervines have a long history of successful use within traditional medical systems to promote relaxation and alleviate stress, anxiety, and insomnia without adverse effects.  Natura’s Tranquility™ formula contains several classic botanical nervines and is specifically designed to calm, tonify and regenerate the nervous system.

There are three main types of herbal nervines; tonics, relaxants, and stimulants. Since many herbs are dynamic “multi-taskers” that offer a variety of therapeutic benefits, additional subcategories and secondary actions exist and overlap is common.  Tranquility™ features primarily tonic and relaxantnervines.

    Nervine Tonics
Nervine tonics are nutritive herbs that slowly nourish, strengthen and regenerate the nervous system over time. This group is well-indicated for restoring nervous system function and resiliency when damaged by stress, shock, or physical injury, as well as general nervous debility. A premier example of a nervine tonic herb contained in Tranquility™ would be Avena sativa (Milky Oats).

    Nervine Relaxants
Nervine relaxants are herbs that exert a calming effect on excited nerves. These botanicals are very useful for easing both physical and mental tension.  Herbs in this category can offer immediate relief to anxiety, muscle tension, insomnia, “mental chatter” and nervousness. Scutellaria lateriflora (Skullcap) and Piper methysticum (Kava) are two prime examples of relaxant nervines featured in Tranquility™.

In addition to its potent nervine effect, Tranquility™ also promotes GABA (gamma amino butyric acid) production and possesses adaptogenic qualities to improve attention, cognitive function, and mental performance during stress, and reduce post-stress fatigue.
